The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has reopened its Embassy in Seoul, the Republic of Korea in March 2012. The Embassy has currently been engaging in further strengthening the bilateral relations of the two countries. In addition, the Embassy promotes the Ethiopian export products and tourism, attracts Korean investment to the country and facilitates the transfer of technology from Korea to Ethiopia. It also carries out image building and public diplomacy activities as well as improves people to people relations. Furthermore, the Embassy has started supporting Ethiopian and Ethiopian origins to participate in the country’s overall development endeavors.

The Embassy is accredited to Brunei, Indonesia and Philippines.

    The 8th National Flag Day

    The 8th National Flag Day was marked at the Embassy of FDRE in Seoul on 25 October 2015. During the occasion, the Flag Day message was communicated and the FDRE National flag was honorably hoisted along with the National Anthem song.     The Embassy will be conducting a candle-lit vigil on Tuesday 28 April 2015 at the Embassy Building between 17:30 PM and 18:30 PM, for the Ethiopian Citizens who were the victims of the savage murder committed by the so-called Islamic State in Libya on 19th April 2015.     A Book of Condolence Open

    The Ethiopian Parliament declared three days of national mourning starting from 22nd April 2015, strongly condemning the inhumane and cowardly killing of innocent Ethiopians in Libya by ISIS on April 19, 2015. The Ethiopian Embassy in Seoul will be opening of a Book of Condolence for 3 days from Friday 24 April 2015 until Tuesday 28 April 2015, between 10:00~12:00 AM and 14:30~16:30 PM.     Ethiopian Embassy Participated in Coffee Expo

    Coffee Expo was held in COEX from April 09 to April 12, 2015. S.Sara, Ethiopian coffee company, participated in the exhibition in cooperation with Ethiopian Embassy, and introduced a large variety of coffee to Korean buyers and customers.

    Ethiopian President visited Chuncheon

    H.E. Dr. Mulatu Teshome, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, visited Chuncheon City on April 18, 2015 and paid tribute to the Memorial Tower. President Mulatu said that he is very proud of freedom and stable governance that Koreans are enjoying. He also mentioned that "Even though the first chapter of the relationship of the two countries has started with blood of Ethiopian soldiers, he is hoping the second page of the two countries relationship would be filled with investment, trade and other exchanges"

    Ethiopia - Korea Business Forum was held on April 15, 2015.

    Ethio-Korea Business Forum was held with the attendance of H.E. Dr. Mulatu Teshome, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on April 15, 2015. Representatives of Korean government and members of the business community also attended the forum. The business forum provided a clear picture of what Ethiopia can offer to Korean businesses as well as clarify the views of investment climate of Ethiopia.

    Korea Is a True 'Blood Brother' of Ethiopia - President Mulatu

    H.E. Dr. Mulatu Teshome, the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and H.E. Park Geun-hye, President of the Republic of Korea, held a summit at Cheong Wa Dae (Blue House) on April 14, 2015. The two heads of state exchanged views on measures to advance bilateral relations and promote substantive cooperation.

    OPDO (Oromo Peoples' Democratic Organization)'s 25th Anniversary has been celeberated in the Embassy of the F.D.R. of Ethiopian in Seoul on April 07, 2015. On this occasion, members of the Embassy expressed their joy for the day and reiterated their promise to jointly carry out their responsibilities in developing the country in line with the sacrifice made by OPDO and EPRDF.

    Ethiopia MOFA Delegation's Visit to Chuncheon

    Ethiopian Delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited Chuncheon City on March 22, 2015. They visited the Memorial Hall for Ethiopian Veterans of the Korean War and Ethiopian veterans' memorial statue, which can be found along the Gongjicheon Stream in Chuncheon City. A large hall built in the shape of three African huts marks the memerial hall and it was built to honor the Ethiopian troops who were sent to Korea in 1951 as part of the Kagnew Battalion.

    Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony Day

    Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony Day was taken place on March 5, 2015. The Embassy, Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopian Bet presented about Ethiopian coffee and its industry, its market in Ethiopia. In addition, Ethiopian Airlines explained about the Airline performance and its future plan. Around 30 people from different back ground participated in the program.

    Ethiopia earns $114mn from horticulture exports in 6 months

    Ethiopia generated $114 million from horticultural exports during the first six months of its budgetary year (which began last July), the Ethiopian Horticulture Development Agency (EHDA) said Tuesday. "Nearly $91 million of total revenues were secured from the export of 289 million flower cuttings and over 20,000 tons of roses and summer flowers," Mekonnen Hailu, head of public relations at the EHDA, told The Anadolu Agency. "The balance was obtained from nearly 77,000 tons of vegetables, fruits and herbs," he added. According to Hailu, the Netherlands represents the main export destination for Ethiopian flowers, accounting for 80 percent of the countrys total flower exports. Other markets include Germany, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), France, Italy, Japan and the U.S. Hailu said the main export destinations for Ethiopian fruits and vegetables included EU countries, the UAE, Somalia, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Sudan, among others. The EHDA has been registering growth from year to year since its establishment a decade ago, Hailu said. "Ethiopia earned over $245 million from horticultural exports in the last fiscal year ending July 7, 2014," he explained. "This amount exceeded by more than 6 percent the $230.5 million in revenue generated the previous budget year," he added. The amount earned in the first six months of the current budget year, he said, had also surpassed ?by 7.2 percent ?the amount generated in the same period last year. "Demand for Ethiopian horticultural products has increased significantly in the global market and the countrys foreign currency earnings from the sector have grown in tandem," Hailu told AA. "New investors ?from the Netherlands, India, Ecuador and Saudi Arabia ?have all recently engaged in the [horticultural] sector," he noted.

    H.E. Dr. Kassu Yilala visited STEPI

    On January 20th 2015, National Biotechnology Steering Committee and Task Force of Ethiopia led by H.E. Dr. Kassu Yilala Ashame, former Deputy Prime Minister, visited STEPI-IICC to discuss a way to develop customized science and technology policy in Ethiopia. Minister Counsellor Mesfin Midekssa from the Ethiopian Embassy in the Republic of Korea also participated to support the event. H.E. Dr. Kassu showed a great interest in developing its biotechnology sector with a greater national support. Dr. Song Chiung, Research Fellow of STEPI and Professor Endashaw Bekele Wordoffa of the committee presented 'Evolution of Korean Science and Technology Policy,' and 'Ethiopia's Biotechnology and its Needs' respectively. After the presentations, discussion continued. The committee and STEPI researchers exchanged idea to foster the biotechnology with limited resources. Both sides found that there should be greater lessons from the initial stage of the South Korean development.

    Seminar on Ethiopia's Economic Outlook and Investment Opportunities

    Seminar on "Ethiopia's Economic Outlook and Investment Opportunities" was held on January 22, 2015 at Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mr. Mesfin Midekssa, Minister Counsellor from the Ethiopian Embassy in Seoul, extensively explained about the reason why Korean should invest in Ethiopia now.

    Ethiopia participates in the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2014 (10.20.2014)

    The 19th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP??4) is being held in Busan, the second biggest city in the Republic of Korea, from 20 October to 7 November 2014. This is the second ITU Plenipotentiary Conference to be held in the Asia-Pacific region, the first having taken place in Kyoto, Japan, in 1994. The conference takes place at the state-of-the-art BEXCO Centre, and is hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning of the Republic of Korea. Around 3000 government delegates, including 150 ministers and vice-ministers are expected to participate in PP??4, and over 300 000 visitors are likely to attend the many special events that have been arranged to coincide with PP??4. The Ethiopian delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister / Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will attend this conference as a member country.

    Ethiopian Ambassador attended in the 2nd Nakdong River World Peace Culture Festival (September 29, 2014)

    The Chilgok County of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province hosted the 2nd Nakdong River World Peace Culture Festival from September 25 to September 29, 2014. In pre-opening ceremony, 120 million won was delivered to Ethiopian Ambassador to Korea. The money consists of coins collected by students of elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The money will be used to establish an elementary school in Digaluna Tijo, Ethiopia. Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, KIM Gwan-yong, Mayor of Chilgok County, BAEK Sun-ki, Member of National Assembly, LEE Wan Yong and 15 Ambassadors including Ethiopian Ambassador attended in this festival.

    Ethiopia's top student matriculated in KAIST (Sept 22, 2014)

    A "Special" student was admitted to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The special student is Mr. Gemechu Bekele Tolossa from Ethiopia, who took top place on the Ethiopian University Entrance Examination. Mr. Gemechu, the highest scorer of the Ethiopian University Entrance Examination in 2013 (637 out of 700) started KAIST's Bachelor Degree courses from fall semester of 2014. Mr. Gemechu said that he wanted to study in Korean University, which has the state-of-the -art education and research facilities. He added that "it is really helpful for me to receive scholarship and living expenses from the school." Mr. Gemechu entered the medical school of Addis Ababa University, where only talented Ethiopian students attend. The reason why he gave up on the medical school and reapply for KAIST was that he wanted to study engineering and brain science in the university which has better education facilities and excellent faculty. The biggest difference between Korean University and Ethiopian University is education facilities. In Ethiopia, there are no computers and projectors in classrooms and around 200 students are sitting together in one classroom. Mr. Gemechu is planning to study brain science or medical science in KAIST. He would like to study engineering integrated with medical science in the future.

    KIA Motors Corp. will train Ethiopian auto mechanics (September 18, 2014)

    KIA Motors Corp. signed Greenlight Project Agreement with KOICA and Korea World Vision on September 18, 2014. The purpose of Greenlight Project is to solve youth unemployment in Ethiopia and to improve the level of Ethiopians' self-reliance. According to the Agreement, KIA Motors Corp. will establish a training center for auto mechanics in Addis Ababa and will train 1,400 mechanics for five years. In addition, KIA Motors Corp. will provide Ethiopia with logistics vehicles and vehicles for mobile auto repair. KIA Motors Corp. plans to provide necessary support to improve the level of self-reliance for Ethiopians. The automobile market in Ethiopia is currently expanding and demand for auto mechanics are increasing rapidly. It is expected that a training center for auto mechanics will contribute to solve youth unemployment and it will also help to increase incomes of local residents. One from KIA Motor Corp. said that KIA Motors hopes to promote the company's corporate social responsibility through Greenlight Project in Ethiopia. It is also hoped to increase KIA's brand awareness in Africa.

    The Embassy of Ethiopia participated in the 17th Busan International Travel Fair (September 17, 2014)

    The Embassy of Ethiopia participated in the "17th Busan International Travel Fair", which was held from September 12 to September 15, 2014 in Bexco, Busan. It was a good opportunity for the public to learn about tourist attractions of Ethiopia and to experience Ethiopian culture. The Embassy showed the traditional way of having coffee and made other participants to taste Ethiopian coffee during the travel fair.

    Delegation from Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority (ERCA) Visit Korea (Sept 16, 2014)

    A total of five officials from Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority participated in a program offered by Korea Customs Service to learn Korea's modernization of customs administration and BPR (Business Process Re-engineering). Korea Customs Service invited the participants from four different countries including Ethiopia from September 15. On September 15, 2014, Mr. KIM Nak Hoe, administrator of Korea Customs Service, had a meeting with the heads of delegation from four countries and discussed about ways to strengthen mutual cooperation. The participants will visit Busan Main Customs, Incheon Airport Customs, Busan Postal Customs to experience Korea's customs administration.

    Pusan National University (PNU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) (September 05, 2014)

    Pusan National University (PNU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) on September 05, 2014. In 2011, Mr. LEE Jang Gyu took office as the new president of Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) and he is the first Korean President of African University. Currently, the number of academic entities of ASTU has reached seven Schools and the University has an enrollment of 20,000. The University is focused on research and education specializing in Science and Technology. Mr. KIM Ki Seob, President of Pusan National University (PNU) said that PNU has planned to establish networks for joint research and academic fields with Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) through students and researchers exchange. Mr. LEE Jang Gyu, President of Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU), said that the University is expecting to strengthen its competiveness through exchange with Pusan National University, which has excellent infrastructure in science and technology.

    Seoul Open House (August 29, 2014)

    On the occasion of Seoul Open Night and Seoul Open House, the Embassy of Ethiopia opened its building to the public on August 29, 2014. It was an interesting experience for citizens and a wonderful opportunity for them to understand Ethiopia and Ethiopian culture.

    The negotiation on Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement was held between July 21 and July 24, 2014.

    The negotiation on Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement was held between July 21 and July 24, 2014. The Ministry of Finance of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance of the Republic of Korea agreed the draft of the Agreement and signed on the provisional agreement. The Ministries of the two countries agreed that business profits will not be taxable in the source State if the activities of an enterprise continue in that State for less than 12 months. Income from investments will be taxed in the source State and the limited tax rate will be applied to the investment income tax. Real estate stocks will be taxed in the country of source, since they have strong connection with its location. Income from disposition of real estate will be taxed only in the grantor's country of residence. Ethiopia is rich in natural gas and mineral resources. Ethiopia also accounts for the 2nd largest population in Africa and has abundant labor whose low costs offer it a comparative advantage. For these reasons it is highly possible for Ethiopia's market to be expanded. The Ministry of Strategy and Finance of Korea is expecting that the Agreement would facilitate mutual economic cooperation as well as stimulate the flow of investment from the Korean side. The agreed tax treaty will be ratified by the both countries hereafter and take effect.

    Foreign Minister Conveys the ROK

    Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se hosted a tea meeting on July 24 for the ambassadors to the Republic of Korea from the 21 countries that fought on the side of the ROK in the Korean War. The event served as a meaningful occasion for the participants to bring renewed attention to the significance of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and share a vision to usher in a new era of happiness for the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia and the global village by building upon the past 60 years of friendship as peace-loving allies.

    Prime Minister Hailemariam holds talks with the Speaker of the South Korean Parliament (Jul 12, 2013)

    Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn received Mr. Kang Chang Hi, Speaker of the Parliament of South Korea today (July 11th). During the discussion, Mr. Kang underlined the interest of South Korean businesses to become involved in various sectors of the Ethiopian economy. The two sides exchanged views on ways to further strengthen bilateral relations. Prime Minister Hailemariam suggested it was important for the South Korean parliament to support businesses which were interested in investing in Ethiopia. He also hoped that the Government of Korea to expedite the delivery of loans promised for planned development efforts in Ethiopia.

    Parliamentary speaker to visit Africa to discuss economic cooperation (July 3, 2013)

    South Korea's National Assembly speaker will leave for Africa Wednesday to discuss ways to expand economic ties with several resource-rich nations on the continent, the Assembly said. Kang Chang-hee will fly to Kenya later in the day as part of a 13-day trip that will also take him to Tanzania and Ethiopia, the Assembly said in a statement.

    Samsung, Ethiopian govt sign an MOU to develop ICT industry (June 21, 2013)

    Samsung Electronics has announced that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Government of Ethiopia. This MOU is structured as a co-operative partnership to develop infrastructure through IT solutions - enhancing social welfare, education, health, security and e-government.

    Ethiopia: Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros Meets Koica's President (June 21, 2013)

    Foreign Minister, Dr. Tedros, also met with the President of the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Mr. Young-Mok Kim in Seoul on Friday last week. Discussions emphasized ways of strengthening the two countries cooperation on economy, technical, technology as well as human resource development.

    Korea and Ethiopia sign MOU on culture and tourism (June 21, 2013)

    Korea and Ethiopia have reached an agreement to cooperate on bilateral culture and tourism endeavors. On June 21, Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and Ethiopia's Ministry of Culture and Tourism signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) to establish a solid partnership regarding the two sectors. The two nations agreed to cooperate on exchange of work force as well as information, collaborative research, training skilled manpower, and development of programs.

    Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom met with Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se (June 20, 2013)

    On June 20, Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Tedros Adhonom met with Korean Foreign Minister, Yun Byung-se. The two ministers pointed out that bilateral cooperation in government affairs has strenghened following the reciprocal visits of the two contries' leaders ub 2011, but economic cooperation is very much insufficient. They shared the view that the two countries need to be partners for shared growth by linking Ethiopia's human resources and Korea's experiences and technology.

    Korea-Ethiopia business forum seeks bilateral cooperation (June 20, 2013)

    The Korea-Ethiopia Business Forum held on June 20 sought economic cooperation between the two nations. Organized by the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) and the Ethiopian Embassy in Korea, the forum attracted a 160-strong delegation from Ethiopia including high-ranking officials and Korea's Vice Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy (MOITE) Kim Jae-hong. The forum was in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The delegation flew in on Ethiopian Airlines, the first African airline flying to Korea.

    Ethiopian Airlines inaugurates new flight to Seoul (June 19, 2013)

    The Ethiopian Airlines, one of the fastest growing airliners in Africa, on June 19, 2013, launched its new destination to Seoul, South Korea. The inaugural flight to Seoul coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and South Korea. The Ethiopian Airlines made the inaugural flight with Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Incheon International Airport in Seoul. Senior government officials, diplomats, members of the business community and an Ethiopian cultural troupe are on board.

    Korea Association of Ethiopian Studies inaugurated in Seoul (May 20, 2013)

    SEOUL, KOREA - This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Ethiopia. The ties started during the Korean War in 1951 when the Ethiopian Emperor, Haile Selassie, sent 6,000 troops to fight as part of the American-led UN force supporting South Korea. In December, 1963, the two countries established ties and have continued this positive relationship until today.

    Ethiopia's flag carrier's decision to launch flights to Korea is more than just commercial interest, said the African country's ambassador to Seoul. "It is an expression of our solidarity," Ambassador Dibaba Abdetta told The Korea Times on May 8 in his Itaewon office.
